The Names and the Honour of Adam

After Adam (AS) was created, Allah gave him a gift unlike anything given to the angels before him — knowledge itself.

وَعَلَّمَ ءَادَمَ ٱلْأَسْمَآءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنۢبِـُٔونِى بِأَسْمَآءِ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

"And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, 'Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.'"

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31

Allah taught Adam (AS) the names of all things, then turned to the angels and asked them to do the same. It wasn't a test meant to embarrass them — it was meant to reveal something important about this new creation.

قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

"They said, 'Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise.'"

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:32

The angels responded with complete humility. They didn't pretend to know something they didn't. They acknowledged that all knowledge belongs to Allah, and whatever they know is only what He has taught them.

قَالَ يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ أَنۢبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَنۢبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَآئِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

"He said, 'O Adam, inform them of their names.' And when he had informed them of their names, He said, 'Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed.'"

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:33

Then Allah asked Adam (AS) to inform the angels of the names — and he did. This was the moment that revealed Adam's unique capacity: the ability to learn, to hold knowledge, and to communicate it. It was a sign of the trust Allah was placing in humanity.

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

"And [mention] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate before Adam'; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers."

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:34

Following this, Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam (AS) — not in worship, but as an act of honor and recognition of his elevated status. Every single angel obeyed immediately. Except one. Iblis refused, driven by arrogance, and in that single act of disobedience, he placed himself among the disbelievers.

This honor given to Adam (AS) was not just for him alone — it was a gift extended to all of his children, for all time.

۞ وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ وَحَمَلْنَٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَفَضَّلْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍۢ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًۭا

"And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference."

— Surah Al-Isra 17:70

Allah honored the children of Adam — every human being who would ever live — giving them the ability to travel across land and sea, providing them with good and pure sustenance, and favoring them above much of creation. This is a dignity given to humanity simply for being human, regardless of belief or background — a responsibility to live up to, and a blessing to be grateful for.
