The Creation of Adam

Before any human walked the earth, Allah announced His plan to the angels.
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى جَاعِلٌۭ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةًۭ ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ ٱلدِّمَآءَ وَنَحْنُ نُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ وَنُقَدِّسُ لَكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
"And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?' He [Allāh] said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'"
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:30
The angels, in their humility, wondered how a being capable of corruption and bloodshed could be placed on the earth, when they themselves only glorified Allah. Allah's answer was simple yet profound: He knew something they did not.
Allah then explained what this creation would be made from.
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًۭا مِّن صَلْصَٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
"And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.'"
— Surah Al-Hijr 15:28
Not from light, like the angels. Not from fire, like the jinn. But from clay — humble, earthly material. Yet Allah was about to do something extraordinary with it.
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ
"And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
— Surah Al-Hijr 15:29
Once Adam (AS) was shaped and given life from Allah's own breath, the angels were commanded to prostrate to him — not in worship of Adam, but in obedience to Allah's command, honoring this new creation.
Allah elaborates further on this process in another surah, describing the careful perfection behind every part of creation.
ٱلَّذِىٓ أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ ۖ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنِ مِن طِينٍۢ
"Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay."
— Surah As-Sajdah 32:7
Nothing Allah creates is random or careless — every part of creation, including the very first human, was perfected with purpose.
ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسْلَهُۥ مِن سُلَٰلَةٍۢ مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ
"Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained."
— Surah As-Sajdah 32:8
From Adam (AS) came every human being after him — through a process Allah describes with both honesty and humility, reminding us that for all our pride, our origin was humble.
ثُمَّ سَوَّىٰهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِۦ ۖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرَ وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ
"Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful."
— Surah As-Sajdah 32:9
And then Allah completed the creation — proportioning the body, breathing in the soul, and gifting humanity with hearing, sight, and hearts capable of understanding. Yet Allah closes this verse with a gentle rebuke: how little we actually show gratitude for these gifts.
This is where the story of every human being begins — not with arrogance, but with clay, breath, and the mercy of a Creator who gave us senses and understanding so that we might recognize Him.
