Paradise and the One Forbidden Tree

Allah settled Adam (AS) and his wife in Paradise, granting them complete freedom with one single exception.

وَقُلْنَا يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنْهَا رَغَدًا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

"And We said, 'O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.'"

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:35

Everything in Paradise was permitted to them except approaching one tree. It wasn't a harsh restriction — it was a simple test of obedience amid abundance.

But Iblis, true to his vow, found his opening.

فَأَزَلَّهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْرَجَهُمَا مِمَّا كَانَا فِيهِ ۖ وَقُلْنَا ٱهْبِطُوا۟ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّۭ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّۭ وَمَتَٰعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍۢ

"But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, 'Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.'"

— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:36

Satan caused them to slip, and they were removed from the comfort they had known. Allah then informed them that they — and their offspring — would now descend to the earth, a place of both struggle and provision.

The same moment is described again in Surah Al-A'raf, with greater detail of how Iblis approached them.

وَيَٰٓـَٔادَمُ ٱسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ ٱلْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

"And 'O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:19

Then Satan came to whisper doubts into their hearts.

فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ لِيُبْدِىَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِىَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْخَٰلِدِينَ

"But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, 'Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:20

Iblis didn't simply tempt them with pleasure — he twisted Allah's prohibition into something it never was, suggesting the tree was being withheld from them out of jealousy, not mercy.

وَقَاسَمَهُمَآ إِنِّى لَكُمَا لَمِنَ ٱلنَّٰصِحِينَ

"And he swore [by Allāh] to them, 'Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:21

He went further, swearing falsely that he had their best interests at heart — using Allah's name to deceive them, a tactic of manipulation that still echoes in how falsehood often disguises itself as sincerity.

فَدَلَّىٰهُمَا بِغُرُورٍۢ ۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا ٱلشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ وَنَادَىٰهُمَا رَبُّهُمَآ أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا ٱلشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَآ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

"So he made them fall, through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And their Lord called to them, 'Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:22

Once they tasted from the tree, the consequence was immediate — an awareness of vulnerability they had never experienced. They instinctively tried to cover themselves, and Allah's question to them wasn't out of ignorance, but to allow them the space to acknowledge what had happened.

Their response is one of the most important models of repentance in the entire Quran.

قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ

"They said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:23

No blame placed elsewhere. No argument. Just complete acknowledgment of their own wrongdoing and a sincere plea for mercy — this is what separated their slip from Iblis's outright rebellion.

Surah Ta-Ha adds yet another layer to how Iblis approached them.

فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ قَالَ يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍۢ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ

"Then Satan whispered to him; he said, 'O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?'"

— Surah Ta-Ha 20:120

He didn't call it a "forbidden tree" — he called it the tree of eternal life and a kingdom that never fades, appealing directly to humanity's deepest desires: permanence and power.

فَأَكَلَا مِنْهَا فَبَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْءَٰتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۚ وَعَصَىٰٓ ءَادَمُ رَبَّهُۥ فَغَوَىٰ

"And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred."

— Surah Ta-Ha 20:121

And so they ate from it, and their vulnerability became apparent. The verse is direct in stating that Adam (AS) disobeyed his Lord — but this single word should never be confused with rebellion. As we will see, what follows this moment defines the entire difference between a human mistake and a satanic one.
