Iblis and the First Act of Arrogance

After Adam (AS) was given form, Allah commanded all the angels to prostrate before him as a sign of honor.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَٰكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

"And We have certainly created you, [O mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam'; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated."

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:11

Every single one obeyed — except Iblis. He alone refused, breaking ranks with all of creation in that moment.

Allah asked him directly why he disobeyed a clear command.

قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍۢ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍۢ

"[Allāh] said, 'What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?' [Satan] said, 'I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay [i.e., earth].'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:12

Iblis's answer revealed the root of his downfall: arrogance based on material origin. He believed fire made him superior to clay, placing his own judgment above Allah's command.

قَالَ فَٱهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَٱخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ

"[Allāh] said, 'Descend from it [i.e., Paradise], for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:13

Allah's response was immediate and final — Iblis was expelled from his elevated position, reduced to the lowest standing for his pride.

قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

"[Satan] said, 'Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected.'"

— Surah Al-A'raf 7:14

Rather than repenting, Iblis asked for something else entirely: more time, until the Day of Judgment, to carry out the enmity he was now determined to hold against humanity.

Allah repeats this same moment in Surah Al-Hijr, adding further detail to Iblis's exact words and Allah's response.

إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

"Except Iblees; he refused to be with those who prostrated."

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:31

Allah then asked him directly why he had refused to prostrate.

قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

"[Allāh] said, 'O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?'"

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:32

Allah asked again, almost giving Iblis the chance to reconsider — but his answer remained the same prideful refusal.

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ

"He said, 'Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud.'"

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:33

Allah's response came at once, casting him out for his defiance.

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌۭ

"[Allāh] said, 'Then depart from it, for indeed, you are expelled.'"

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:34

This expulsion carried with it a lasting consequence.

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

"And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:35

The curse placed upon him would last until the Day of Recompense — a permanent consequence for a single act of arrogance against a single command.

Instead of seeking forgiveness, Iblis made a vow that would define his role for the rest of human history.

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

"[Iblees] said, 'My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them [i.e., mankind] on earth, and I will mislead them all.'"

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:39

He declared open enmity against every human being, vowing to make sin appealing and to mislead as many as possible.

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

"Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

— Surah Al-Hijr 15:40

Yet even in his vow, Allah's mercy is visible — Iblis himself acknowledged he would have no power over Allah's sincere, devoted servants. His arrogance could only affect those who chose to follow him; it could never overpower true sincerity to Allah.

This is the first lesson every human inherits from this moment: arrogance — placing one's own judgment above a clear command from Allah — is the root of disobedience. And yet, sincerity and devotion to Allah remain the believer's protection against it, for all time.
