Reflections in Surah Ash-Shams and Al-Qamar
Two shorter surahs revisit the story of Thamud with poetic intensity, drawing out timeless lessons about transgression, trial, and divine justice.
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ
"Thamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,"
— Surah Ash-Shams 91:11
This verse identifies the root cause of their denial: tughwa — transgression and excess. Their rejection of Salih (AS) was not born from lack of evidence, but from their own moral excess and pride.
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا
"When the most wretched of them was sent forth."
— Surah Ash-Shams 91:12
It was the most wretched among them who rose up to commit the final act of defiance — hamstringing the she-camel. This shows how a single individual's evil action, when supported by the silence or approval of the community, can bring devastating consequences upon an entire nation.
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا
"And the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, '[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink.'"
— Surah Ash-Shams 91:13
Salih (AS) is referred to here directly as rasulullah — the messenger of Allah — emphasizing his prophetic authority. His instruction was simple and specific: protect the she-camel and ensure her access to water.
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا
"But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]."
— Surah Ash-Shams 91:14
They denied him and killed the she-camel, and Allah's punishment fell equally upon all of them — a complete, leveling destruction that left no distinction between the instigators and those who silently approved.
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا
"And He does not fear the consequence thereof."
— Surah Ash-Shams 91:15
This final verse affirms Allah's absolute power: unlike any earthly ruler who might fear backlash or consequence for their decisions, Allah's justice carries no such concern. His decree is final and complete, answerable to none.
Surah Al-Qamar revisits the story with additional dialogue, capturing the arrogance of Thamud in their own words.
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ
"Thamūd denied the warning."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:23
Once again, the central fact is stated plainly: Thamud denied the warnings sent to them.
فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًۭا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًۭا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّفِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ وَسُعُرٍ
"And said, 'Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.'"
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:24
They expressed their disbelief through arrogance, questioning why they should follow a single human being from among themselves, dismissing the very idea as leading to error and madness — failing to recognize that every prophet sent throughout history had come from among the people they were guiding.
أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌۭ
"Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:25
Their arrogance peaked as they questioned why divine revelation would single out Salih (AS) among them, rather than accepting the possibility, they dismissed him outright as an insolent liar.
سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًۭا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ
"They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:26
Allah responds directly to their accusation with a warning: soon, they would know with certainty who was truly the liar — and the answer would not be Salih (AS).
إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةًۭ لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ
"Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:27
Allah reveals the deeper purpose behind the she-camel: she was sent as a fitnah — a trial and test — to reveal the true state of their hearts. Salih (AS) was instructed to watch and remain patient as the test unfolded.
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍۢ مُّحْتَضَرٌۭ
"And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn]."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:28
This verse adds an important detail: the water source was to be shared on a rotating basis — one day for the she-camel, another for the people — establishing a clear, fair system to test their patience and obedience.
فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ
"But they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her]."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:29
The community called upon their companion — the most wretched among them, as mentioned in Surah Ash-Shams — and he stepped forward, daring to commit the act, and hamstrung the she-camel.
فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ
"And how [severe] were My punishment and warning."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:30
Allah poses a rhetorical question, inviting reflection on the severity of what followed — a punishment that matched the magnitude of their defiance.
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ
"Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen."
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:31
A single shriek was sufficient to destroy them entirely. The comparison is striking: they became like the dry, crumbled fragments of twigs found in an animal pen — withered, scattered, and utterly lifeless. The mighty builders of mountain homes were reduced to nothing in an instant.
وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ
"And We have certainly made the Qur'ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?"
— Surah Al-Qamar 54:32
The chapter closes with a direct invitation to every reader, in every era: Allah has made the Quran easy to understand and remember. The story of Thamud is not merely ancient history — it is a living reminder, asking each of us whether we will take heed of the lessons within it. The fate of those who reject divine guidance, no matter how skilled or powerful they may be, remains a timeless warning for all who reflect.
